THE HUNTER REPORT
Don’t sling mud and be nice!
Republican Candidates Meet & Greet
By: Pat Hunter
February 15, 2010
On a blustery Saturday (Feb. 6) morning, candidates ventured out into the wintery element to meet and greet and make candidacy announcements at the Republican Primary meeting. Drivers maneuvered for parking spaces while the less fortunate braved a short distance walk. People gathered in the main Historic Loudon Courthouse to hear candidates. It was standing room only.
A brief party meeting preceded the introduction of candidates. The speaker gave advice to Republican candidates, don’t sling mud at your opponent and once a candidate wins the primary race support the winner, no matter what. Nonetheless, the speaker referred to the winner of the last presidential election but her conciliatory tone did not appear to extend to national elections.
One by one, incumbents and challengers vying for positions in county-wide and district races were introduced to the audience. Family members, supporters, friends and party faithful applauded with enthusiasm. At least one candidate was booed under the breath of some not so nice individuals located in the back of the courtroom.
Candidates spoke briefly and echoed pretty much the same message, a request for support, consideration for your vote followed by a thank you. The speaker urged candidates to pay their donation to the party before leaving. According to one candidate’s website, candidates running in the Republican Primary were asked for a non-refundable donation of $300 for county-wide races and $100 for district races. There are 22 people running for county-wide races in the Republican primary. Additionally there are 18 people and 1 person who isn't sure if he's a Republican or not but he considering running in a district commission race.
After the meeting adjourned, people spoke to candidates while others chatted and enjoyed donuts and hot coffee compliments of the Loudon County Republican Party. This was a great opportunity for people to get together to see and hear the candidates running for public office.
The Republican and Democratic Primary will be held on May 4, 2010 and voters have the option of voting in either primary if they wish to do so. The names of Independent candidates will not appear on either party primary but will automatically advance to the August 5th County General Election.
