Mayor and Trustee - Race to the Top
By: Pat Hunter
January 11, 2010
Now that Mayor Doyle Arp has decided not to run for re-election, other candidates are coming out of the woodwork.
Trustee Estelle Herron picked up a petition for county mayor in the Republican Primary. Herron withdrew her petition as Trustee. Gregory Hackney also picked up a petition in the Republican Primary for county mayor. Van Shaver has qualified for county mayor in the Republican primary. Lenoir City Mayor Matt Brookshire has qualified to run in the Democratic Primary race.
Now that Herron would like to be county mayor, that leaves the Trustee's race wide open. Another surprise is former county mayor/executive George Miller Sr. picking up a petition for Trustee. After George Miller retired, Miller's administration and finances, became the butt of jokes and topic of numerous discussions by the Budget Committee. He was referred to as "King George" by some on the Budget Committee.
Others interested in the Trustee's office include Billy Pickel, county employee in the Codes Enforcement department. When asked if everyone personally picked up their petitions, the answer was yes except for one candidate. School Board member Leroy Tate purportedly picked up a petition for his daughter Michele Tate Castle.
