November 4th Ballot Question

By: Pat Hunter

September 21, 2008

Just last week, I could not believe my eyes when I went to buy an item at the grocery store, a quart size jar of Hellman's mayonnaise and the cost was $4.48, talk about sticker shock! High food prices are out of all reasoning, just look at the staggering prices of basic staples such as milk, cereal, eggs, juice, bacon, coffee, etc.

Do you remember the quote made famous by Republican challenger Ronald Reagan to Jimmy Carter, Democratic incumbent in the 1980 presidential election debates, "Are you better off than you were 4-years ago." As you sit in long lines at the gas station & face paying $4-5 for gas or milk and higher energy costs, ask yourself that very same question.

With their good friend George Bush in the White House, the Top 400 wealthiest families in the US paid the same amount of tax that a policeman, nurse and others in a similar profession and salary bracket. As the economy worsened for the rest of us, the wealthiest got richer and received a bigger piece of the pie while the middle class declined further and got a smaller piece of the pie. Can you afford 4 more years of Republican leadership? Please take the time to vote on November 4th.

And closer to home, voters will be asked to decide the fate of a county and city referendum question - to permit or not permit retail package stores to sell alcoholic beverages in the cities and Loudon County. Also, Lenoir City has an election for mayor, three city council seats, Treasurer-Recorder and three school board seats.
